This course provided a thorough understanding of the foundations and distinctions between science and engineering, with a focus on the Computer Science domain. I gained advanced knowledge of the structure and approach of scientific investigations, including their limitations, within Computer Science.
The course emphasized theoretical and practical knowledge related to scientific methodologies and methods, as well as scientific approaches, thinking, and working methods and tools. The overall goal was to understand the research process from the formulation of a scientific problem to the dissemination of research project proposals and research results.
Key Learning Outcomes:
I learned to independently identify, formulate, evaluate, and address research problems using relevant methodologies. The course covered literature search and analysis strategies, teaching me how to analyze and critically evaluate various literature to identify state-of-the-art knowledge and gaps related to research problems.
I gained skills in applying theoretical models and utilizing qualitative and quantitative research methods systematically for selected problems. The course also covered how to prepare and present a research project plan, ensuring I can effectively communicate my research ideas.
Research Ethics and Dissemination:
An important aspect of the course was learning to assess research ethics, focusing on privacy and social responsibility. I also learned how to effectively disseminate scientific content within the Computer Science domain using established formats, including presentations and documents.
Main Course Aspects:
- Scientific methodologies (with focus on Computer Science and ICT disciplines)
- Formulation of a problem space, hypotheses, and research questions
- Literature search and analysis strategies
